Falmer

BUILDING WORKS: On the Falmer Footbridge are due to start at the beginning of February. At a meeting with representatives of West Sussex County Council and the contractors, the outline plan of the work involved was explained. We were told that the ramp leading to the bus stop will be closed and will be renewed, which means the buses from Lewes will not be able to set down or pick up in Falmer whilst this work is taking place, passengers will be taken on to Falmer Station, the next stop, and will have to use the underpass at the University to reach the opposite side of the A27 and pick up a bus back to Falmer from there, tickets from Lewes will be honoured for this short journey. The main footbridge will be open but on some occasions closed for night work. The work is expected to take up to three months for completion and there will be a short time when the footbridge and the A27 will be closed for the installation of the new ramp. The A27 on the south side leading to Falmer will be restricted to one lane and the speed limit reduced to 50 mph. It is uncertain whether restricted lanes will be in place on both sides of the A27 but there will be notices published in the press. To alleviate the problem of catching buses for passengers from Falmer, the Brighton Bus Company have said they will install a completely new set down and pick up stop on the Falmer Road just below the traffic light junction, this is of course only buses travelling back and forth from Brighton.
