Fears of even more homes being built

Even more homes could be built in the site six developments, Bersted parish councillors fear. They are worried that the 1.5ha set aside in their portion of site six for a health centre and a school could be used for housing instead.

It will be up to the NHS and the county council to decide whether to make use of the space to provide the new facilities. If one, or both, decide against spending the money, it will leave the land vacant.

The developer could then apply to Arun to build on the sites. This could provide 75 dwellings.

Councillor Simon McDougall said: 'This land has to be maintained in a state where the grass has to be cut for up to ten years.

'There is nothing in the future to stop a developer coming forward with a further application for housing when that time runs out.'

Cllr Martin Lury said it would be difficult to fight such an application. If it occurred, the homes would have a big impact on the North Bersted conservation area and Berry Lane.

Mr Cantwell said any such application would be considered in line with normal procedures. This would see the developer having to make contributions which were considered necessary for such as education and schooling.
