Fifty people were evacuated from a block of flats in Brighton after a blaze broke out earlier this morning (January 27).

Four crews were called to the fire in North Street at about 5.14am.

The fire service said the blaze started in a third floor flat in the 100m by 100m building.

The owners along with 50 other residents were evacuated from the block.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames using hose reels and water jets.

An electrical fault with a television set is believed to have caused the fire and it is being treated as an accident.

Crews gave advice to the owners before leaving the scene.
