First steps to a new job

Bexhill College has launched a new project to help the unemployed and those with poor job prospects improve their chances of gaining employment.

'First steps' was devised to target difficult-to-reach learners who want to work with children. The course helps them to make a choice of working with nursery, primary aged, secondary aged children or young adults.

The course helps them to achieve the first steps towards getting a qualification and allow them to progress to an NVQ.

A placement is undertaken in schools around the local area. The learner acts as a support assistant as they gather evidence for their portfolio and move on to a classroom assessment by an NVQ assessor.

The 60 hour course runs over 20 weeks and is held at Sidley County primary school.
