100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 4 February 1916. VTC Manoeuvers. Since its inception the Local Company of the Sussex Volunteer Training Corps has shown a thoroughly conscientious interest in the work it has undertaken, The Company comprises the Uckfield and Fletching Platoons, and on Sunday afternoon they participated in some instructive exercises on Piltdown Common.

The event was the occasion of considerable public interest, a good many townsfolk assembling in the vicinity of the public hall to witness the preliminary parade and start. This took place at 2.30, the officers present being Colonel F J Todd (Commandant of the Company) and Major R J Streatfield. A crowd of three or four hundred people awaited their coming at Piltdown, where at the Chapel they were joined by their comrades from Fletching. Mr G M Maryon-Wilson, JP., is the senior officer of the latter Platoon, which, in his indisposition, was in charge of Instructor Ralph. The Company first formed into four Platoons for the purpose of Company drill, after which two of the Platoons were extended and advanced in rushes to capture a trench at the far end of the Common, the remaining Platoons acted as supports. The operations took about an hour, and the Uckfield Platoon marched back into the town with a military swing shortly before five o’clock.
