NATIONAL CARE HOMES OPEN DAY: Friday 17th June is National Care Homes Open Day. Ersham House IS taking part in this event and encouraging local people to visit the home and take part in their Spa Day. There will be lots facials, manicures, foot spas, hand massages, freshly squeezed fruit juices and smoothies, healthy snacks and a warm welcome to anyone who wants to come along and meet staff and residents.

HIP FRACTURE REPAIR: There is an opportunity for Hailsham and other residents to be involved in reviewing evidence and making recommendations with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). These particular committee meetings take place in London and travel and accommodation costs are paid for by NICE. However if you are unable to take part in the committee, there will be Public Consultation where anybody can have their say online or by post; that begins in January 2017. HISTORICAL SOCIETY: The last meeting was a presentation by Dave Brooker, who took the audience around the British Isles and beyond. The quality and presentation of his photographs were out of this world. Through the use of technical computer facilities, in this modern digital age, one picture rolled into the next. For example, from looking at a lake scene, and what looked like a pebble had been dropped, the next picture blended in from the ripple effect.

Dave’s presentation started in the Lake District, and then onto the main local subject title of the evening - Ashdown Forest. From there, we went to Scotland and the Isle of Islay. At all these places the countryside was shown with all the glory of the magnificent scenery, from the rolling country of the South, to the more rugged landscape of the North, showing the changing aspects at different times of the year. Next, abroad to Budapest, where this time the buildings and architecture of this city had captured Dave’s eye.

Coming back nearer to home, to the Seven Sisters and Coastguard cottages, there were truly wonderful pictures as the sun rose in the early morning, when the orange/red sun changed to yellow, and the reflection on the sea (this is reported to be the most photographed area in England). To conclude, there was a trip around our County of East Sussex, looking at buildings and countryside around Rye, Batemans, Eastbourne, Sheffield Park, etc.

In all, a very good evening, with professional presentation.

The next meeting of the Hailsham Historical and Natural History Society will take place at the Methodist Church Hall, High Street, Hailsham, on 8 June, at 7pm for 7.30pm start. The talk will be The Life and Times of Edith Cavell, who was executed during World War I. This true story is presented by Melanie Gibson-Barton. All welcome. Visitors £2.50. Enquiries 01323 440359.

HAILSHAM MUSEUM: If you want to know more about the past history of Hailsham Town, the Museum is now open between 10am and 12.30pm on Friday and Saturday mornings, and can be found at Blackman’s Yard (behind the Kemer Kebab take-away shop and Town Council Offices), in Market Street. Admission to the Museum is free.
