Gladrags was set up two years ago by local businesswoman Michele Duke, along with her friend Julie Eltham and since then has gone from strength to strength.

Described as a ‘social club for ladies who love life’, Gladrags offers women the opportunity to meet up for days out, restaurant meals and much more.

Trips in the pipeline include visits to Bath, London and Florence.

Michele said: “Most of our members are 40 - 45 plus and we have both single and married members.”

Michele had the idea of starting the club while speaking to potential customers in the fashion shop she runs.

She explained: “Women would say that a dress really suited them but wondered when they would ever get a chance to wear it.

“Another reason is the number of women who have moved to Hastings from places like London and who are often alone.

“Because it is women only there is no pressure and they are able to relax. Many of our members say that it has changed their lives.

There are lots of women who find it hard to meet people. We make it easy.

“It is an events club rather than a club like the W.I. that holds regular meetings. we plan trips and outings, walks, and go to the theatre or restaurants.”

Michele says the group is keen on supporting local restaurants and businesses in the Hastings and Rother area.

Events have included a cocktail evening at a Hastings bar and a picnic at Bedgebury Pinetum.

They also enjoyed a fun Christmas party with live music entertainment from local group Soul Xpress and attended a pantomime.

The group is holding a free open evening event at the White Rock Hotel, Hastings, on Saturday January 23 at 6pm and is inviting potential new member to come along and find out more.

Michele said: “We want to encourage women to come along and meet new friends.”
