Members of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service in Brighton and Hove learned about becoming 'dementia friendly' as part of Dementia Action Week.
The Dementia Action Alliance (DAA), managed by Age UK Brighton and Hove, delivered a ‘dementia friends’ session to firefighters at Preston Circus station yesterday (May 21), at the beginning of Dementia Action Week.
It was the final of 12 briefings across the city, by the DAA, which aims to make Brighton and Hove a 'dementia-friendly city'.
Firefighters are now offering free home safety visits for people with dementia, as they can be at greater risk of fires in their home.
Matthew Moors, Dementia Action Alliance coordinator, said “As the name implies, Dementia Action Week isn’t just about awareness, it’s about asking people to take action.
"We’re keen to get organisations across Brighton and Hove to join the East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and many others in becoming ‘Dementia Friendly’. Understanding dementia and making some small adjustments to your business can make a huge difference to people living with the condition, helping them feel less isolated and alone.”
Last week the Dementia Action Alliance delivered a Dementia Friends Session to eight i360 staff members, in advance of an event this week (May 23), where over 20 dementia carers are having a free ‘flight’ on the seafront attraction.
Brainville at Night, a play about dementia, is running at The Warren until tomorrow (May 23).
And a coffee morning is being held on Thursday (May 24) between 10.30am and 12.30pm, by the DAA, Age UK Brighton & Hove and the Alzheimer’s Society to celebrate some of the work going on for people living with dementia and their carers in the city.
The Dementia Action Alliance is managed by Age UK Brighton & Hove and aims to make Brighton and Hove a dementia-friendly city. To get involved email Dementiaa@ageuk-bh.org.uk or call Matthew Moors on 01273 720 603.
