To celebrate the 70th Birthday of the NHS, the hospitals asked staff to submit their song suggestions for the parade playlist, and from these suggestions they made a 70-song soundtrack to usher their float from Hove Lawns to Preston Park tomorrow (August 4).

Nicky Caley, quality care assistant at BSUH and LGBTQ+ staff network member and Pride Parade Project organiser, said: “Our LGBTQ+ staff network wanted to give all our staff the opportunity to share what Pride means to them and we did this by inviting everyone who works at BSUH to choose a special song to add to a NHS 70th birthday playlist.

“Listening to our playlist on the day will be like listening to what Pride means to all our wonderful staff.”

This is the second year BSUH have taken part in the Brighton Pride parade, and Miss Caley explained the importance of representing the hospitals at the event.

She said: “2017 was a really proud year for us with our BSUH float marching alongside other public sector organisations.”

She continued: “It was so positive hearing stories from the people on the parade route about the good care they’d had at the trust, and how pleased they were to see us there.”

Miss Caley also promised big things from their 2018 float, drawing input and inspiration from several Brighton-based institutions.

She said: “I’m delighted that we’ve had artistic direction from the University of Brighton students and some amazing design skills provided by a group of young people from the Prince’s Trust.

“We can confidently claim that this will be a tasty tribute to our NHS’ 70 birthday.”

Miss Caley refused to reveal the playlist’s content but gave a couple of clues about what had been included.

She said: “I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise, but what I can say is we have songs from at least the last five decades and we can guarantee there’s a few Britney Spears songs thrown in for good measure.”
