SEE ME AFTER SCHOOL: If I was to write a school report on the recent weather, I would have to say something on the lines of______, Has no sense of consistency. Needs to learn to rein in it's tendency to be erratic, as it's lack of stability lets others down. Well, it does doesn't it? The weather can let us down, and spoil our plans. Here we are at the end of June, and we have no idea whether to take a picnic hamper to Camber Sands, or put another log on the fire. It rains and thunders all night, and then greets us with blue skies, wispy clouds, sunshine spilling out of it's ears, and a heat wave. It's a case of a big bowl of stew one day, and strawberries and cream on the patio the next. 'The market won't be on', I said to my husband, as the dreg ends of a storm flooded our guttering, but an hour or two later, everyone was out in sundresses and Hawaiian shirts, market traders were out in force, and there was a general air of frivolity. A woman in front of me in the queue was buying up cucumber and fresh fruit for the Pimm's. We are so wonderfully adaptable in Britain. We follow behind the weather, just accepting it's mercurial nature. We dance to it's tune partnered by a brolly. We dance anyway, whatever happens in dear old Britain. It's the spirit of the blitz!

ROD’S CALENDARS ARE ON SALE: Rod Stuart creates his beautiful calendar’s, and is giving the profits of the 2017 calendar to the village hall, which is extremely generous of him. The calendar is on sale in Iden Village Stores, and is a vivid collection of nature, photographed in and around Iden. Buying a calendar is on most people’s must- do lists, in preparation for the New Year, and helping the village hall at the same time helps towards the hall’s proposed new wash room facilities. Our village hall, white, with it’s green and white sign over the door, not only belongs to the village, but is an oasis of constant activity, and none of us knows how many times a year we will personally partake of it’s hospitality. Calendars are also for sale at the Pop-In, once a fortnight in the village hall.

AN AFTERNOON OF CREAM TEAS: On Saturday 25th June, Iden villagers, and a few people from round and about, crowded into Iden village hall for cream teas. Anne Banning made the scones, which were lovely. She must have been up all night lifting scones in and out of the oven [bless her]. Jill Johnson, Carol Bourne, Janet Wood, Chris Slater and Anne Banning, served tea in dainty teapots, and scones with jam and cream. The girls really entered into the spirit of things, and wore ‘Nippy’s outfits [very Lyons Corner House!]. They all worked very hard, and allowed the village yet another get-together, the proceeds, of which went to the village hall. Ray Griffin helped serve, and called the raffle, and many villagers donated cakes to be sold, as part of the tea. As usual, it’s always lovely to join a gathering of Iden people, every one with their own particular charm and idiosyncrasy. Thank you to everyone who helped make the afternoon such a success.

ALL CONTRIBUTIONS GRATEFULLY RECEIVED: Carol Bourne is still wanting donations of books, bric-a brac, and household items for Iden Fete’s ‘Bargains Galore’ [no electrical goods though]. Please ring Carol [telephone 01-797 280464], and she will advise where to leave donations.

A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion, in Iden Parish Church, at 9.30 a.m. on Sunday.

BINGO: Iden Bingo is as popular as ever. The next Bingo session will be on Thursday 14th July, in Iden village hall. Doors open at 2pm, eyes down at 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome from the Rye area. There is a flier, a jackpot, a raffle, and a light tea at half time.

THE POP-IN: Every fortnight, Iden village hall has a Pop-In, for anyone who likes a chat, and coffee/tea, biscuits, books and bric a brac. It starts at 11am and goes on until lunch time, and it’s a great way to start the week. The next Pop-In is on Monday11th July.

THE NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: The Parish council meet next on Tuesday 5th July, in Iden village hall, at 7.30pm. Do come along and see what’s ‘afoot’ in Iden.

IT’S ONLY A POUND: This week I bought some vanilla body butter, because it was only a pound. I slathered it on my face and hands, and ended up smelling like a cake mix. I am very gullible when I see anything marked a pound, because it seems such a rounded, affordable number. I would spend my last allocated day on earth in a pound shop. A little old lady [probably only a year older than me truth be known] said, “You must try this salmon, I don’t know how they do it for a pound a tin. She waved it in front of my nose. “It’s solid salmon. My sister- in-law recommended it”, she went on. “I had half for my tea the other day and put the other half in the fridge. You would love it. The whole thing is just pure salmon, no bones at all”. I thought I was going to be there all day staring at the tin of salmon between us. I saw no chance of a get away. I was longing to cross the aisle to non-stick bake ware. Buying salmon had not been on my agenda, but I bought a tin, as somehow I didn’t want to disappoint her, and demean her little spiel. She was right it was lovely. It just goes to show, you should always listen to little old ladies in pound shops!
