An Independent View: We need a park-and-ride site

We can pretend. We can convince ourselves there is no location for a park-and-ride site. We can polemicise about how roads create traffic (they don't) - and how car parks create cars (they don't).

We can bury our heads in the sand. Until the parking in our neighbourhoods is beyond endurance. Until the traffic jams are out of sight. Until the city grinds to a halt.

Then, we can argue - in vain - that our city is "full".

It's all rubbish. It's prevarication. Ultimately, it's cowardice. Political cowardice.

Ludicrously, Labour once scared the city with propaganda about how Conservatives planned to put car parks...under our parks.

Since then, the Greens have introduced charges that make it as expensive to park in Brighton as in Park Lane...under Hyde Park.

We need a park-and-ride site.

Even if it's in Mid-Sussex.

Even if it's in the South Downs National Park.
