The Lancing school scooped 1,300 from the Youth Opportunities Fund as well as securing sponsorship from local firm Mackleys.

Assistant head Dick Bryant said: "As well as paying for new strips, kit, basketball balls, score calls and other equipment, we have managed to provide a new kit already for the year 7s who will join us in 2008 as well as setting up a new girls team.

"Basketball is popular here and our year 10 team has been selected for the national league for the first time in 10 years."

And as for revealing the result of the match between the school and Worthing Thunder, Mr Bryant said: "Let's just say it was a close run thing."
