Land Army recognition at long last for North Bersted woman

A North Bersted woman has received belated recognition for helping to dig Britain to victory in the second world war.

Proud Lillian Benton has been awarded her Land Army medal for her work in the war effort.

The award is being handed out by the government to all those who took part in the essential work to keep producing food to feed troops and civilians.

Mrs Benton (85), of Addison Way, was called up in 1942 and set to work on farms in the Aylesbury area.

She remained in the area, along with Tring, for two years. Her most memorable work was threshing corn in the fields.

After three years, she was moved back to her home town of Hastings to work full-time on a market garden. She stayed there until she was demobbed in 1947.
