Little Common road safety fears

ROAD safety campaigners in Little Common voiced their concerns about traffic on Peartree Lane to politicians last Friday.

Members of PLAGAS (the Peartree Lane Action Group Against Speed) spoke to MP Gregory Barker and district councillors Joanne Gadd and Patrick Douart, about the problems being faced on the road which they fear will lead to a loss of life.

The group say residents of Peartree Lane suffer from drivers flouting the 30 mph limit, HGV lorries using the road illegally and disproportionately high levels of traffic at peak times as the road is used as a rat-run.

They are meeting county officials this week to discuss the issue.

Mr Barker pledged his support to the group.

He said: "There is certainly a case for a number of things which can be done to make the road safer. We need to make sure that the voice of the residents is heard."

Cllr Gadd said: "I think we should get the police up here to make sure people are aware of the speed limit. We could also have more signs to remind people of the 30 mph limit.

Cllr Douart added: "There are definitely things which can be done; flashing signs that remind people of the speed limit - that would be something.

"We will wait and see what county have to say. If they don't agree we can certainly take it up again."
