At 2.40pm the same day police and paramedics were again called to attend to the same man only a short distance from the hospital in Swanfield Drive.

While medics were talking to him he lost consciousness and was taken back to St Richard's, before being transferred to Southampton Neurological Unit where he is undergoing urgent surgery.

His injuries are described by police as life threatening.

Sussex Police are investigating the cause of the man's injuries and are appealing to any possible witnesses who have not already contacted police to assist with the investigation.

Detective Sergeant Alan Pack said: "If anyone saw a man drinking in any of the shelters around Kings Parade near the sea front in Bognor Regis during the morning of Tuesday 26th February, or if they saw a man with an obvious untreated head injury that day, I would be grateful if they would contact us.

"The slightest piece of information may help us establish what happened."

The numbers to contact police are 0845 60 70 999, quoting Operation Swanfield, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
