Men take on fire

TWO men were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation after trying to fight a fire at a motor spares shop.

Flames were spreading from a tyre into the rear store room at Worthing Autospares in Ham Road, Worthing, when firefighters arrived just after 11pm.

A resident of the flat above, a passer-by and an off duty police officer all tried to battle the blaze with fire extinguishers.

The resident and passer-by suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to Worthing Hospital.

Fire crews from Worthing and Lancing remained on the scene for nearly two hours.

Watch commander Darren Wickings said: "The shop had a large amount of tyres and could have been very serious."

The fire, which happened last Monday (June 120, is thought to have been deliberate and is under investigation.
