Mountfield

A final reminder that Monday (November 25, noon till 9.00) is when Southern Water will be holding their drop in surgery at the Village Hall for householders and others to pop in and discuss the new sewerage and treatment plant scheme for (parts of) Mountfield.

Mountfield Parish Council had a constructive council meeting on Tuesday 12th. The Southern Water plans were discussed and representative from SW and Clancy Docwra, the contractors were on hand to field questions. The discussion was mainly in general terms such as legal costs (none to MPC, since you ask), access arrangements during construction, and the fact that one of the proposed temporary compounds is in that boggy corner of the field behind Jim’s.

Also at the meeting, Kathryn Field, our County Councillor, gave her regular report which inevitably led to the topic of Mountfield and Whatlington School. There were some interesting ideas. Kathryn has been a staunch friend throughout and, crucially, represents our interests at the key committee.

Other topics covered were roads (as you can guess, more of the same, again), the rail contractors who trashed the lane round Castle Farm, and ongoing planning enforcement issues. Steve Smith sent news from the Mountfield Club. The snooker team travelled to top of the table Hawkhurst A last week and suffered a 4-1 defeat. The match though was a lot closer than the score line suggested with both Alex Gray and Sean Spilett losing their matches on the black. Kevin Gray won Mountfield’s solitary frame.

We had some fun and games, the other evening, when Rock Cottage started to reverberate to an enormous lorry (sorry, they are called logistics these days) outside. A vast tanker (a sort of logistic) had followed the satnav instructions and ended up on Rocks Hill. Out popped a very tiny Polish chap, who actually made the logistic look even bigger than it already was. The tanker was not only very long, it was immensely wide and at points shaved the banks on both sides as it went. He was very courteous and didn’t speak a word of English, bless ‘im, but he could drive. Pete saw him to the bottom of the hill where he did an immaculate three point turn — no mean task with that length of lorry (sorry) in utter darkness. We then sorted out his correct route in German (which we don’t speak, but let’s not quibble) and off he went with much shaking of hands and our good wishes. The most exciting thing to happen in Upper Mountfield for ages.
