Netherfield Breakaway Club

THE May meeting was held at the White Hart, Netherfield, on Thursday May 17 with 15 members attending and two guests.

The September outing was discussed and our hostess, Marian Williams, asked for a vote to decide on the venue - Down House in Kent or Bateman’s, Burwash, with a visit to Merriments Garden Centre afterwards.

The decision was made in favour of Bateman’s and Marian will check on dates and costs - approx £20.

The July meeting will take place as a lunch at The White Hart with a patriotic theme.

The cost will be £9.95 and a menu will be available in advance with several choices.

Christine Hayward, our guest speaker, then gave a fascinating and well-researched talk on Battle Abbey - its history after the Battle of 1066.

Originally built by the monks who encouraged local people by giving them work and food, it was consecrated in 1087 and dedicated to St Martin, the patron saint of France, and soldiers. Sadly William had died and was unable to be present.

The Abbey has seen a great deal of history - many reigns of kings and queens, partly survived the dissolution of the monasteries and had a number of owners.

Now under the umbrella of English Heritage, the Abbey and grounds attract large numbers of visitors all year and hosts a variety of exhibitions and mock battles.

Christine was thanked for her very informative talk, with documents and pictures.

Tea, coffee and biscuits were served and the raffle drawn, supervised by Diana and Sheila.

The June meeting will be on Thursday 21 with Nicky Harris, stage producer, speaking on ‘Behind the Scenes’, which will give an insight into stage experiences.
