INNER WHEEL CLUB: A Fish and Chips and Quiz Evening is being held on Wednesday February 10 at 7pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Highdown Road. Tickets priced £10 are available in advance from 01273 473483 or 01273 813810 (not available on the door). This event is in aid of The Lewes Oyster Project and organised by the Inner Wheel Club of Lewes.

NEVILL BUSES: The following extract is taken from the internet which I felt needed a more general exposure as we might suddenly find we have a bus problem if they cannot find anywhere to park up:

Compass Buses urgently need to find a new depot within Lewes to service the 500,000+ passenger journeys it supports to rural destinations around East Sussex. Managing Director Chris Chatfield says: ‘We are looking for secure open-air parking for up to 18 buses overnight and all day Sundays (and Bank Holidays). There needs to be a suitable area with drainage for washing vehicles each night. Ideally there also needs to be a small office facility (a portakabin is sufficient) with a kitchen area and toilets.’ Again, please let us know about any sites that could be suitable.

BUS PARK: With some of the money from the sale of North Street (Phoenix Area) I suggest the existing Bus Station could have a face lift to be utilised for the buses to park and made to look decent again instead of an eye sore for the town.

RESIDENTS WASTE: Last Monday’s residents association meeting was the subject of food waste collection on Nevill. One resident reported seeing the dustbin men put her food bags in the general waste on three occasions. I was surprised to hear other people say they had also observed this happening, including my wife, who had also mentioned it on several occasions and I had dismissed it as rubbish. No pun intended. Please could you all keep a watchful eye on the collection, and if you see this happening, report it to the council. Not only is it a waste of our time and money sorting the food scraps and buying the special bags, but it is a disgraceful waste of public money, especially as the council is cutting the expenditure on social care.

WADDESDON MANOR: Last week’s Plumpton Parish Pump had an article about Waddesdon which we visited a few years ago and also had the pleasure of staying the night in their Five Arrows hotel which is situated by the entrance gates. The manor is very decadent and well worth a visit with beautiful gardens and an aviary too.

BOROUGH BONFIRE

SOCIETY: Will be hosting a quiz night at St Mary’s Supporters Club today, Friday, from 8pm. All are welcome, members, non-members, family and friends. £2 per person for teams of four or less with prizes for the winning team. There will also be a raffle.

WALLANDS HEAD: After nearly seven years as Headteacher at Wallands, Debbie Gordon, will be leaving in July to spend more time on the family farm and develop her work with OFSTED. The Governors are working closely with ESCC to manage the recruitment process to find the right person for September. The Governors have agreed a project to fit solar panels on the roof of the school with OVESCO. As part of that process scaffolding has been going up around the school and deliveries of materials are needed, and will continue to be needed as the work progresses. This places an additional pressure on our already overstretched parking and space around the front entrance. To help ease this congestion and keep our children safe please do not come onto school grounds in your car

CHRIST CHURCH: Worship on Sunday will be led by Dick Vesey and Sunday Club for children will be running during the service. Evening Worship at 6.30pm will be led by our minister, Rev John Gordon. Our Tots Group continues to meet on Friday mornings between 9.30am and 11.30am and although proving popular we still have room for a few new people. If you are new to the area and are a carer of pre-school children please pop along to see us. It is just £1 per family for the morning.

LEWES NEVILLE WI: The Lewes Neville WI’s first meeting this year took place on Wednesday January 20 at St Mary’s Church Hall for Ros Black’s talk, Scandal, Salvation and Suffrage, women of the temperance movement. She told us of women such as Sarah Robinson, The Soldier’s Friend, and Agnes Weston, The Sailor’s Friend who worked in the temperance movement to improve the lives of soldiers and sailors focusing on dealing with alcohol abuse, which was very prevalent among these men in Portsmouth. They also became involved in the suffrage movement and the struggle for women’s rights. Next month, on Wednesday February 17 we will be hearing from Harry Duffin about his career as a TV writer, followed by a quiz on TV programmes past and present. We welcome new members who may attend one meeting before deciding to join us.

GARDENING CLUB: St Mary’s Gardening Club is meeting for the first time this year on Monday February 1. Our speaker will be Lesley Baker whose talk is entitled Out on a Limb – Tales of a Tree Surgeon. The meeting starts at 7.45pm at St Mary’s Social Centre and visitors are welcome (£1). Subscriptions are due: £8 pa. There will be refreshments, a raffle and a bookstall. The competition is a photo: Winter.

JUMBLE SALE: Nevill Juvenile Bonfire Society will be holding a jumble sale at the Ringmer Village Hall tomorrow, Saturday, doors open 2pm. We will be collecting jumble in your area during this evening, Friday, from 6pm and would be grateful if you could leave any jumble by your front gate for collection.
