New drive to boost recycling

A campaign to boost recycling around Bognor Regis is gathering pace with leaflets and bin stickers being delivered to residents.

The Recycle at Home initiative by Arun District Council is focusing on about 10,000 households in the town and Littlehampton. Most are in traditionally hard to reach properties such as flats, bedsits and homes occupied by Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian and Portuguese residents.

The 71,000 project aims to increase awareness of what people can recycle locally and where.

The leaflets will be followed by trained canvassers making home visits in April to offer recycling information and advice. A detailed leaflet and posters about recyling will also be distributed to community buildings such as churches, libraries and sports centres.

Four roadshows are planned as well at dates and venues yet to be decided to further promote recycling.

The leaflets feature Littlehampton resident and worker Sofia Teixeira, who is Portuguese. Cllr Stephen Brookman, in charge of the council's recycling work, said: 'Encouraging the public is one of the most important challenges that we face if we are to continue to improve our recycling performance.'

Funding for the Recycle at Home campaign has come from the WRAP national concern backed by government money.
