New hopes for station car park

Fresh efforts are being made to provide a temporary car park on old station land in Uckfield and relieve pressure on residential streets near the railway station.

The town council idea had stalled after East Sussex County Council's highways department opposed it and because the owners of the land were afraid pressure to make such a car park permanent would hinder re-development of the site.

But it was reported at a meeting of the town council's environment and leisure committee on Monday that there was now support to resurrect the idea.

Cllr Duncan Bennett told committee members about a 'positive'meeting, called by the town council, with representatives of Buxted Parish Council '“ which shares a rail parking problem with Uckfield '“ the Community Rail Partnership, which promotes development of passenger usage of the line, Southern Rail, the Uckfield Regeneration Partnership and the Wealden Line Campaign.

MP Charles Hendry was unable to attend but wrote in saying he supported action to reinstate the car parking and he was worried about the highways department opposition.
