New lift planned for the Bognor's library

A new lift could be installed at Bognor Regis Library under county council plans

It has submitted a planning application for the work at the London Road site.

A statement by its planning agent, Ian Haywood, says: “The scheme will not change the use of the building. Its intention is to improve upon the existing facilities offered to the staff and public of the local area.

“In order to provide a fully accessible library, it is proposed to erect a lift shaft to the right-hand side elevation. This will allow for access for all persons to all parts of the property.”

The two-storey library was built in 1964. It benefited from a £205,000 refit in 2005 which saw the ground floor extended but the first floor closed.

Since then, the stairs have been roped off. Installing the lift will ensure everyone will be able to get to the first floor, says Mr Haywood.

The council’s plans show a new toilet for disabled people on the first floor with an office/meeting room and a tea station. The lift shaft will extend the size of the library by some 13.2 sq m to 852sq m.

The library’s internal layout will have to be slightly changed to make room for it.
