Rip-Off Britain - Serious Scams Alert: I don't know if anyone managed to see the live show on BBC1 on Monday- hosted by Angela Ripon, Gloria Hunniford and Julia Somerville? - It was very interesting, as always, but also timely; as I had just received an email from our Neighbourhood Watch Chairman, Rod Ffoulkes, also alerting me to the very problems raised on the TV programme - Scams, Bank and Identity Fraud. These crimes are becoming really prevalent, are costing people thousands of pounds, and are targeting anyone and everyone, all age groups, working or retired, rich and poor... we are ALL vulnerable to the criminals' extremely clever, dexterous and plausible take-ins. Please take heart that the Police, as well as the TV producers, are now taking very seriously any reports of cold calling - on the phone or at the front door, or rogue traders forcing low standard work at extortionate costs, or intimidating tradespeople sometimes demanding that the customer drive to their bank.. And, just as terrifying, the nasty phone call scam where the caller stays on the line to trick you into giving your bank details; or tells you that your computer has a virus that has to be shut down immediately - while they take all your personal data and contacts.. This is a tough world at times but we can help each other, keeping an eye out in our neighbourhood, and reporting ANYTHING that seems slightly odd or not quite honest. No-one should be thinking they're on their own, or are being daft, or '˜should've known better' - We may all be at the mercy of the clever criminal - but we can ALL be vigilant and start wiping out these horrible scams! Hooe Parish Morning: Saturday 15th October, in Hooe Village Hall from 10am - 12.30pm. The Parish Council are hosting this event which is designed to give out all up to date information on a variety of subjects - including, as mentioned above, SCAMs and Neighbourhood Watch. There will also be presentations from The Powdermill Trust, the NHS Public Engagement Program, and Defibrillator training, and much more. Refreshments will be available and everyone is welcome.

Ninfield Flower Group: This Saturday, 15th October, in the Memorial Hall, the Flower Group are holding a Jumble Sale. Doors open at 2pm, entry is only 50p, and there will be loads of bargains to be had. If you have stuff you’d like to donate but can’t get up to the hall, please call Jennifer Collett on 892878 and she will arrange a collection.

Ninfield Horticultural Society: Monday 17th October, 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall - the Horticultural Society start their new season with their AGM; an ideal time to go and pay your annual subscription, ready to enjoy the year’s exciting programme of events! Following the short meeting, there will be a presentation by popular local speaker Kim Parks, who will be giving one of his slide shows of the natural world around Ninfield- always worth seeing, along with his renowned commentary! Ninfield Local History Group: The next meeting will be on Thursday 20th October, in the Methodist Hall, Church Lane, starting at 7.30pm. There will be a very interesting talk, given by Brigadier Hugh Willing, a professional soldier of some 37 years, as he looks at the events of 1066 with a professional soldiers’ view. This should throw a somewhat different light on the Battle! Entry for the evening is £1 for members and only £3 for non-members, and this includes light refreshments - tea, coffee and biscuits!

Ninfield Bonfire, Procession and Fireworks: Only a week to go, this fantastic event will be held on Saturday 22nd October, on the recreation ground, Church Lane, Ninfield. Everyone should shortly have their flyers through the door giving the precise timings of when the path across the rec. will be closed, the bonfire constructed, when/where the procession lines up and goes round the village, and when the fireworks display is due to start. Residents worried about their animals should call Carol on 893326 for a leaflet giving expert advice from one of the society’s members; a qualified vet and animal behaviourist. This is one of Ninfield’s largest events, with people coming into the village from other bonfire societies to enjoy the procession, and it’s due to Pete, Carol, Ash and Lisa, along with the committee, that it all goes so brilliantly; do take some pennies for the buckets...it costs money to put on, and all profits go to local projects and charities!

The Halloween Ball: The following Saturday, 29th October, and the Memorial Hall will be transformed into a spooky Gothic Mansion, ready to welcome suitably attired guests for a fabulous, fancy dress dinner and dance! The Rave from the Grave is a fundraiser, for the refurb of the Hall’s Kitchen and Toilets, and is hosted by the Carnival Committee. A Food Hall, with roast meats, Curries from the Shiplu in Bexhill, Pies, Jacket Pots etc: Plus a Bar, Cabaret, Magic, Games and dancing to the brilliant Heidi Burson Band. Tickets are £16 per head, to include all food and entertainment. Creaky doors open at 7.30pm and Ghostly carriages at midnight! Tickets on sale now from Sami or the Lower Street Stores!

Youngsters Halloween Parade: - I’m so pleased to say that, after 13 years of doing the Village Trick or Treat Parade for the youngsters, I am now passing the baton on to Stacey Boarer, who is going to organise this years’ event for the Friday before Halloween, 28th October, from 4pm. Please see flyers and posters for all details, there will be a Disco after the Parade, for all the youngsters taking part, and anyone else, from 5- 6.30pm at the Memorial Hall.!

And Finally!: Alf Sage, from the Salvation Army, who I mentioned a few weeks ago, has asked me to thank everyone in the Ninfield, Catsfield, Crowhurst area for their generosity - a magnificent £2081-25p was collected by him and Diana Pilbeam- God bless to all.
