Chitiwiri: Firstly, a message from Sally Bickersteth: Many, many thanks to all, whether you donated bric-a-brac for our stall which was raising money for the community at Chitiwiri, Malawi, or came on the day to buy. Once again we were blessed with wonderful weather for the village fair. Thanks to great generosity there were a lot of bargains to be had and we raised and fantastic £506.30. This money will go towards the current projects by sending out resources for the Days4Girls project which the women’s cooperative are now running. It will also enable us to develop the irrigation project which was started in June this year and is proving to be extremely successful. The next fundraiser will be the collection of clothes, shoes, belts, bedding, handbags, perfume and soft toys. These need to be put in green bags which can be collected from Forge House (the old post office) or tied in a black bin liner. The collection will be on November 18th and I am happy to take them anytime in October or November. Once again – a very big thank you for all your support. Your help really does make such a difference to the lives of the community of Chitiwiri. If you would like more information about this work please email me on [email protected]

Badminton: For the next two weeks, there will be the final Pay & Play sessions in the Pretious Sports Hall on Friday evenings, when Sheldon Chambers (a Badminton England level 2 coach) will be running sessions from 7pm. The cost is £2.50 a session. All very welcome.

Over the borders: There will be an Art Show in Brede Village Hall on Saturday and Sunday, 10-4pm. Works by local artists will be on sale, and you might also like to visit Brede Flower Festival in the church. Over to Beckley on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon for their church fete.

Bowls: The Bowls Club is looking for new members, and anyone interested will be very welcome on Monday evenings after 5.30pm to have a go, or phone Trevor Monk (01797 252307). Bowls is suitable for all ages and sexes, and can be played competitively or socially. Northiam is a small friendly club, and offers a great way to meet new people and get some gentle exercise.

Coffee Stop: Coffee Stop opens in the Church Centre every Wednesday from 10-12 for a chat.

Thursday Seniors: This week, the Club will be entertained by Dave Brooker, and the Citizens Advice Bureau will be available in the morning. If anyone would like to go to the meetings, please call Ann 252343 or Jane 252973, who would like to hear from you. Transport can usually be arranged, and there is always a two course home-cooked meal as well as cheerful company, advice and help and entertainment after lunch.

Horticultural Show: Northiam Horticultural Society’s Autumn Show is a little earlier this year – on Saturday 30th August. With sunshine and showers, all the gardens are blooming, so there should be some impressive exhibits. Yours could be one of them! New exhibitors are most welcome, and the first step is to take a look at the schedule and see which classes appeal. The Schedule can be viewed on the northiamvillage.co.uk web site by clicking on Clubs & Societies and then Northiam Horticultural Society. Just take your exhibit to Northiam Village Hall between 9am and l0.30am, and stewards will be available to assist you. Doors open to the public at 2.30 pm. Do make a note in your diary, it’s usually a fascinating display.

Music: Northiam Chamber Orchestra is looking for new members! It meets on Thursday evenings in the Village Hall. Peter Fields (07792 3291450), the conductor, would be very pleased to hear from anyone interested.

Craft Fair: The Bonfire Society’s Craft Fairs have been very well received, and the next one is on Saturday 6th September. 10am-2pm. There is already an interesting mix of stalls – if you would like to book, please contact via the website northiambonfiresociety.co.uk.

Pink Piglet Day: After you have visited the Craft Fair, the next port of call is Northiam Scout Group’s popular Pink Piglet Day which is also being held on Saturday 6th September at Scout HQ, Goddens Gill. Donations for the raffle, tombola, food hamper or the teas would be gratefully received. Draw tickets are on sale at 50p.

Scout Leaders Wanted: The Cub Scouts are in need of a leader. If anyone is interested in taking on this incredibly fulfilling role, please give Jacky Broad (01797 253228) a call. We have one of the oldest Scout troops in the country, and it has given a fantastic start to a lot of our youngsters.
