In the last couple of years the floor has fallen through and the whole building is in need of some care and attention.

Reverend Geoff Pickering looks after the chapel, which is little more than a shed, as well as St Georges Church and the parish church of All Saints.

He said: 'St Peters is over 100 years old and services there are held only once every other week. The two people who go to the service only go because I have a service there.

'If even a quarter of people who lived in Punnetts Town went to the church I would keep it open.

'But it is so underused there really is no point.'

The proposal is to sell the land on which the church stands and the money to go to the fund for the All Saints church of which 60,000 is needed to renovate the church and its roof.

There is a planning proposal for a two-bedroom chalet bungalow to be put on the site, but no decision made at this time.
