One week to put finishing touches on scarecrows

IN JUST over a week, an army of scarecrows will be walking, running, jumping, cycling, rowing and swimming their way into Battle for the start of the 2012 Battle Scarecrow Festival.

The Olympic-themed festival will entertain visitors to the town for three weeks in July.

It heralds the start of Battle’s Big Event and the characters will make their first appearance in the Battel Bonfire Boyes Carnival Procession on Saturday June 30.

There will also be a re-run of the scarecrow workshop, which proved popular at the town’s recent Mediaeval Fayre, at the Bonfire Boyes Fete on the same day.

Trail leaflets will shortly be available at most of the supporting businesses and the Tourist Information Centre at Yesterdays World.

The festival is supporting the Battle Demelza Shop.

Demelza Hospice Care for Children recently received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. A street collection in aid of Demelza will take place on Friday July 6.

Margaret Emeleus, of the festival committee, said: “It is hoped that not only will there be many interesting sporting characters to see, but that the festival will be rewarded with a generous contribution to this charity. We are most grateful to all of our sponsors: Battle Town Council, Battle Chamber of Commerce, Graham Peters of Foye Estates, Crowhurst Park, Elephant Graphics, Biffa, British Gypsum and Battle Observer for supporting the event.”
