Just a minute

THE disturbing images from Pakistan of cricketing hero Imran Khan being arrested by President Musharraf's men brings into sharp focus the nature of the political crisis in that country.

Since the State of Emergency has been declared over 25,000 people are estimated to have been jailed. Not your 'typical' criminals or terrorist suspects, they are judges, lawyers, journalists, human rights activists, teachers, students, housewives and shopkeepers - anyone who has protested against or criticised the government. Musharraf is viewed as a Western ally in the 'War on Terror', yet his attempts to retain power are terrorising his own people. We need to look again at who we support in this struggle lest we forfeit the values we purport to uphold. And perhaps we should recall these words from the Book of Proverbs: 'One who justifies the wicked and one who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the Lord.'
