LETTER: Addressing winter worries

In August, Dementia Support at The Bridge said we would conduct a survey among carers for people living with dementia to establish their concerns as winter approaches. We have now done this and the headlines are as follows.

Eighty per cent of respondents foresee a high or very high risk of their loved ones suffering a fall this winter. More than 45 per cent foresee a high or very high risk of loved ones getting lost or wandering off. Forty per cent foresee a high or very high risk to their loved one’s general health, while 33 per cent foresee a high or very high risk to their own health.

In response to this, we have arranged a programme of visits to our meetings by organisations that can address some key concerns.

Oct 3. STEPS, who assess and advise on safety in the home.

Oct 10. ESCC Carers Breaks, who can support carers in a number of ways including organising respite.

Oct 24. Wellbeing, who have electronic gadgets that can monitor the safety of vulnerable people in and beyond the home.

Nov 7. Alzheimers Society, whose Dementia Advisers can visit carers and people with dementia at home and support them.

All sessions start at 1.30pm at The Bridge Community Centre, Priory Road

If you are living with dementia or you are a carer for someone with dementia and would find any of these topics useful please come along. There will be no charge or obligation to our group. Our aim is simply to do all we can to keep people safe and out of hospital.

If you can’t get along but have concerns about the winter then call Alzheimers Society on 01424 773687 and ask to see a Dementia Adviser or consult your GP.

We have sent the results of our survey to Hastings and Rother Clinical Commissioning Group, East Sussex County Council, East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust and The Alzheimers Society.
