LETTER: Isolated and inward looking

It is interesting that Mr Quin, who supported the Remain campaign which won in Horsham constituency, but narrowly lost overall, is now assisting one of the leading Leave figures.

One expects that as a former banker with hopefully some greater understanding of economics than his other Brexit Minister colleague, Liam Fox, that he will be able to advise his Ministers on the need to take a cautious approach to their as yet unexplained plans for Brexit.

To heed the dire warnings of the damage to the UK economy of a hard Brexit from the likes of the chief executives of Nissan UK, Jaguar / Land Rover and others including the banks.

But as his colleague Kenneth Clarke has warned, the Government has no definitive plan for Brexit, just as the Leave team never had or could explain.

What will the UK economy look like after we leave the EU, how will we manage immigration or ensure the funds we currently get from the EU for regional development, research, Erasmus student support, agriculture etc, are fully replaced by the UK Treasury?

The short term positive impact of a 15 per cent reduction in the value of £ sterling against the US $ and Euro, on our economy will be lost and the UK will suffer badly once the increased cost of imports feeds into inflation and in two years’ time we lose free trade access to our largest trading partner accounting for almost half our exports when the UK only accounts for under ten per cent of all EU exports.

So the balance of strength in negotiating new trade deals sits with the EU, not with the UK as the Brexiters naively assume.

Those travelling overseas will have already experienced a marked increase in costs as sterling has devalued.

There will be worse to come as, post Brexit, the UK sits increasingly isolated and inward looking in a world that recognises that working together, being inclusive, welcoming and finding collective solutions to global problems on terrorism, environment, and migration is the best way forward.
