Be responsible

FOLLOWING the recent comments regarding the flooding in Sea Road, Littlehampton, please may I add my points of view?

The main consideration here is road safety. But does the occasional flooding in this area pose a real threat?

My experience as a frequent user of this particular section of highway is that it should not.

Firstly, the surplus water lying there occurs probably on, shall we say, 25-35 days on average each year (under 10 per cent).

During these short periods all we need to do, as responsible road users, is reduce our speed during times of danger to a sensible 10 miles per hour.

Secondly, whilst living in these area for some seven years, I have witnessed the need to cross the centre line on only about five occasions.

During these rare happenings, would it hurt us to give way to westbound traffic, costing us maybe three or four minutes of our valuable time?

Thirdly, is it me, or since when was the last time Littlehampton became so popular that all of the parking spaces to the east of the town become full?

Now here are a few comforting thoughts. By observing the above simple suggestions, we will save the high cost of renewing time-worn drainage pipes, until such a time that vital cost cutting becomes less of a necessity, when local jobs are no longer under threat, and then the project can again be reinstated to an “A” classification.

In the meantime, shall we all join Mr Cameron’s “Big Society” and use the opportunity to use the surplus rainwater to cleanse the undersides of our cherished vehicles of the thousands of tonnes of salt granules used so effectively during the dark and icy days of last December?

Lastly, if any of you readers with a little spare time on your hands could don your wellies, take a bucket to the offending site, and splash the collected water over the doggy doo-doo left on the promenade opposite, I know it would be much appreciated. Well done, have fun, and above all, please drive with care!
