Collyer’s students medal at chemistry challenge

Chemistry students from The College of Richard Collyer have enjoyed an extremely successful year at the incredibly competitive Cambridge Chemistry Challenge 2013. Collyer’s students certainly reacted positively to the paper and won 2 silver and 14 copper medals.

The Cambridge Chemistry Challenge is a 90-minute written paper set annually by leading academics of St Catherine’s College, Cambridge. The intention of the paper is to extend students beyond the AS and A2 content and really test whether students can stick with long and involved questions, despite often feeling a little challenged! The paper is very tough and introduces students to some chemical concepts for the first time.

Dr Robert Hussey, Subject Leader for Chemistry, was thrilled with the success: “The Cambridge Chemistry Challenge is a very, very tough paper. It’s simply superb that we had so many keen Chemists wanting to enter. All of our students work immensely hard during the year; their want to keep challenging themselves is impressive. Congratulations to them all!”

After a gruelling set of summer exams, 16 of the AS level Chemistry students, who eagerly took the further test of their academic prowess, managed to gain awards for their efforts. Richard Coldham and Robyn Hockley were both delighted to achieve silver medals. Copper medals were awarded to: Adam Bolitho, Ned Bowen, Esther Cheung, Martin Furlepa; Oliver Giles, Rachel Knowles, Frankie Lin, Harry Nelder; Conor Paterson, Aled Price, Aman Singh; Duncan Smith, Charlie Willis and Zac Wilson.

Collyer’s Principal, Dr Jackie Johnston said: “I’m extremely proud of the students’ achievements and the continued outstanding work of our nationally renowned faculty for Mathematics and Science. The paper was extremely demanding and these chemistry students have impressively demonstrated that they are among the country’s elite.”
