Councillors need to take heed

PLANS for 173 houses on farmland in Yapton have been submitted by Gleeson. If the development, comprising of mainly three- and four-bedroom family homes, receives approval, this will increase the population in Yapton by up to 20 per cent.

This will have a detrimental impact on local infrastructure – roads, doctors, schools and community services will all be stretched. It will be the residents present and new who suffer, not the developer.

At the beginning of this letter I mentioned “farmland”. The development site is grade 1 agricultural, however, the landowner has found it difficult to farm and believes the land is more suitable for housing.

Imagine if every landowner up and down the country replicated this thinking – communities would be devastated.

The Conservative party announced it was offering local authorities, agreeing housing schemes, cash awards to be spent according to community wishes.

If councillors don’t take notice of the unanimous “no” to these fringe developments, they will soon lose the support and trust from the communities they serve.

The Gleeson development is the thin end of the wedge for Yapton.

If the local authorities allow this to go ahead, the Eco-Town will soon be back on the agenda.
