Grammar schooling

THANK you, E Harvey (Gazette letters, February 9), for highlighting grammatical errors.

My pet hate lately is being exhorted to “wrap up warm”, even by weather forecasters who should know better. What has happened to adverbs? The verb is “to wrap up”. How? Warmly.

Sadly, even newspaper editors seem either in favour of incorrect grammar or, worse, are not aware of correct forms themselves.

May I also put in a plea for the eradication of “got” used unnecessarily with have? I’ve, we’ve, they’ve, imply possession. I have doesn’t need got as well. I taught all my classes that “got is a weed in the garden of words”.

I may sound pedantic, but some of us care, and wince at constant solecisms.
