It was forgotten a long time ago

In his letter, Stephen Hardy mentioned '˜the hopefully forgotten Folkestone to Honiton Road'.

Why hopefully forgotten?

I would have thought it would have been welcomed by people living in the West Country wishing to head east more easily especially to the Kent Ports and the Channel and it would certainly help keep freight traffic away from towns and villages.

Actually I think it was forgotten even before it got properly planned.

I remember, well over 40 years ago, seeing a very large hoarding type sign in Buckfastleigh, Devon proclaiming: ‘Honiton to Folkestone Trunk Road’ and below that was a line stating that work would be starting on such and such a date (can’t remember the exact dates!).

Did I miss something? There is a bit of motorway bypassing Southampton but that seems to be it!

I think Mr Hardy got his way years ago as it seems very unlikely that a road like that will ever get built now!
