LETTER: Services need to communicate

There was a very strange juxtaposition of stories in your newspaper last week '“ one headlined '˜Campaign for Station at Glyne Gap' and the other had '˜Rail timetable shake-up plans'.

The first explained that East Sussex County Council is now refusing to even apply to the Government to win funding for a new station at Glyne Gap, alleging that ‘current timetabling’ prevented them from applying. Don’t forget the County Council, which in order to boost its own case for the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road has always vehemently opposed the idea of a new station at Glyne Gap

The second article tells us that everyone’s current favourite train operator Southern, wants to revise the very timetable ESCC says is not going to change.

‘A complete redesign’ is what Southern are arguing for - even though to relieve overcrowding on the very successful Brighton to Ashford service, they are looking at splitting the service into two and making people change trains at Eastbourne or Hastings.

While that does not sound to me at least as an idea which will win much public favour, why ever cannot Southern and East Sussex County Council start talking to each other – and to us? That way we may stand a chance of getting a train service which really serves the public.
