LETTER: Winkle Island

I am writing in an attempt to jog older residents memories with regards to an incident at Winkle Island, East Beach, Littlehampton, in the late 1950s or early 1960s.

I believe this incident involved a troop of about 20 Scouts getting into serious difficulties and may

possibly have even lead to loss of life.

If anyone has details of

this event and could possibly point me in the direction of any authoritative information, press cuttings and so on, it would be much appreciated.

My reasons for asking are purely to either confirm this story or to debunk it as a mistake on my part.

My wife and I originally come from Rustington and Burpham respectively.

We moved away from the area with our young family back in 1977.

Our interest in Winkle Island was aroused as a result of an acquaintance posting a picture on Facebook over the weekend.
