Moving a prime facility ‘madness’

THE decision by Arun District Council not to accept the latest offer from Littlehampton Town Council for the derelict housing offices in Church Street (Gazette, December 22) demonstrates again that the ruling Tory clique at Arun “knows the cost of everything, but the value of nothing”.

The former offices are owned by us all, anyway, and charging one council to transfer it to another seems like bureaucracy gone mad! In any case, cannot Arun see that the prospect of £1.5m investment in the town centre to provide a proper community centre linked to the Manor House is a massive regeneration project in its own right?

Arun also demonstrates once again that it has taken leave of its senses in considering selling off the existing seafront swimming centre for yet more flats, and building a new pool at St Martin’s in the town centre.

The existing very popular and well-supported pool is barely 25 years old. Yes, a bigger training pool would be sensible, as well as re-vamping some of the changing facilities and letting the natural daylight in through the large east window again.

But moving a prime local facility from an obvious tourist location with adequate car-parking to a cramped site with less car-parking is madness.
