Pier Road plan branded absurd

LUDICROUS, ridiculous, absurd, stupid '“ what bright spark in the council thought of this? Do they want to kill our businesses, like they did in the town centre? Who do they think they are?

Should they, the council officers, not consult with us before announcing such statements? And who is going to pay for this so-called "al fresco" atmosphere? How often do we have al fresco weather? We are not Spain!

These are just some of the statements made by the traders and residents over the proposed closure of Pier Road next year.

They feel that they have voices, backed by opinions, ideas, knowledge and experience, and that they should be listened to. I totally agree. I also agree with the statement that some type of consultation should have taken place before the press announcement was made of the road closure. Not doing so has undermined the residents and traders, which has not gone down well.

The traders are obviously concerned over the possible loss of passing trade, and are all very concerned about the disabled and elderly having to park elsewhere.

Deliveries would also be affected '“ they cannot be made at the rear of these premises because vehicles cannot get there.

There are so many questions which need to be answered.

On a positive side, it does seem that the traders and residents are in favour of progress and modernisation, but only if it is done with proper consultation and a logical thought process. They want to make sure, whatever happens, it is done properly, so it does not have an detrimental effect on businesses and homes.

Most are in favour of traffic calming, an enlargement of the paved areas outside the shops and even a one-way system, as long as the boardwalk is completed, and with sufficient parking available.

The main consensus from all involved is "NO, NO, NO" to shutting Pier Road and after discussing it with the residents and traders, I totally agree.
