Seafront is not just for the young

AS one of the majority of older people living in this area, I am appalled at the way the Littlehampton seafront has been and is being ruined in favour of younger people.

The new playground on The Green is very good and well done – this would have been enough to entertain children, but those giant “climbing frames” that you call shelters and which are totally useless as such, are a magnet for children to climb all over.

Eventually there is going to be a horrible accident, when someone falls onto the hard ground beneath.

As for the “longest bench”, it is only used by children to run up and down on (encouraged by parents). Even if we older people could get to sit on it, it is completely uncomfortable.

Now I read, with horror, that someone is planning to construct a huge bucket and spade on the seafront. How totally tacky and cheap-looking is that? It will look the height of bad taste.

The article in the Gazette (October 21) seemed to suggest this was a foregone conclusion, but I have not seen any notices about it. Is the council just going ahead without gauging general opinion, as usual?

How about encouraging older people, who are being turned away by the lack of comfort? Reinstating the old bandstand would be nice, where it used to be, with some comfortable seating around it, and smartening up those run-down ice cream and winkle kiosks near the harbour office.

There should be more consultation about all these alternatives, and then take notice of the opinions.
