Self-service plans?

IN HIS letter last week (Gazette, November 24), councillor Lionel Barnard, Conservative representative for Henfield, claims that my reference to the temporary closure of Littlehampton library being part of a programme of county council cuts, is, in his words “far from the truth”.

However, what Mr Barnard conveniently ignored was my query as to why with several million pounds being cut from the budgets for disabled services, social services, schools, police and transport, West Sussex County Council still has the same number of senior managers and the same number of council committees, when clearly they all have fewer responsibilities.

His response also raises the question as to why West Sussex County Council is increasing spending on library services while making cuts to essential services elsewhere.

Or is it a case that the cuts to library staff will follow once the self-service machines are established?

I wonder how good these self-service machines will be in aiding and advising children, disabled and elderly users of library services?
