Worse threats than dog owners

SURELY I can't be the only one puzzled by your Devon correspondent's remarks (Herald Comment, April 5) regarding the state of Lancing Downs?

I can't speak for the area behind Lancing Manor but, as someone who walks to Lancing Ring from Sompting every day, I tried to work out, using the comments made, where on the Lancing Downs she was referring to.

I'm afraid I'm still at a loss, because the area surrounding Lancing Ring (also known as The Clump) is maintained to a very acceptable standard '“ there are wide-open paths and the area is regularly mowed (in fact, some would say too often).

Lancing Ring itself is easily accessible to everyone, as was proved on Easter Sunday when the car park was overflowing and there were many families with pushchairs, toddlers, etc. enjoying picnics with no problem at all.

Walking through the woods is a very pleasant experience, there are numerous wild flowers and a substantial number of bird species, and the dewpond has been well cared for by the Friends of Lancing Ring (no, I'm not a member).

I agree that in the immediate area near the car parks, there may be a problem with dogs' mess, but once you get out in the open spaces the problem is not enough to force the visitor to turn back.

The views from the top of the hill are spectacular, and the path going across to the Bostal Road is easy to traverse.

As for dog owners spoiling the Downs, I'm afraid I must disagree '“ there are more serious threats to the Downs, such as idiots on motorcycles and visitors who leave their rubbish behind.
