Outdoor pool on Brighton seafront to '˜resurrect' area east of the pier

The developer Sea Lanes Brighton Ltd, is made up of businesses and groups passionate about swimming, including Brighton Sea Swimming Club, Copsemill Properties, QED Sustainable Urban Developments and Swim Trek.

This week it unveiled its plans for a 25m outdoor swimming pool and commercial space at the Peter Pan site.

The developers have a five year lease on the site, to test the waters with a temporary pool ahead of plans for a more permanent 50m facility.

Simon Murie, managing director of Swim Trek, said: “We believe the Sea Lanes development will bring back to the forefront the rich swimming history that made Brighton and Hove the destination for tourists in the 19th Century.

“Using modular construction and ‘meanwhile’ use, we will resurrect this much-loved part of the city and offer the local community and tourists a destination that captures the spirit of Brighton, past and present.”

The group said the pool will provide ‘much-needed swimming facilities’, and will act as a gateway for those looking to gain confidence to swim in the sea as well as a training hub for open water swimming events, triathlon, sea safety and lifeguard courses.

There are also plans for 39 small business units for retail, health and fitness, office space as well as a food court and seating area.

From late June, Sea Lanes will be running a pop-up on the site, where the plans for the proposed scheme will be on display. There will also be swim coaching sessions in an endless pool, a pop-up sauna and an open-air space with events like a silent yoga disco.

The plans are the latest proposals to revamp the area to the east of the pier, which now boasts a zip wire ride, and will soon see the regeneration of the first three terraces on Madeira Drive.

Rich Brett, creative director of We Like Today, the team behind the design, said: “Drawing on Brighton’s rich and colourful history and dazzling disregard for conformity, Sea Lanes ‘meanwhile’ scheme can help revitalise the present and shape the future of Madeira Drive. Definitely and defiantly. This is the city with the natural edge.”

Sea Lanes Brighton said it hopes to secure planning permission this winter and for the swimming pool to open next spring.
