Bognor Regis man hopes to be the first 100-year-old on new road

Mr Sayers enjoyed two celebrations to mark his 100th birthday last Friday.

But he is also looking forward to being driven along the Felpham relief road which also opened then.

His relatives have promised him a journey on it as soon as possible.

While the road was being opened, Mr Sayers spent the morning at a birthday party with the staff of Aronel Cottage Care Home.

The afternoon saw him joined by some 15 members of his extended family for another happy occasion.

He said: “I don’t feel any different being a hundred.”

He was born in Westergate Street, Westergate, and lived in the road until the 1950s.

He worked as a gardener and in a nursery before he spent four years as an orderly in Egypt with the RAF in the Second World War.

He was a nurse in Chichester after the war up to 1980. “It was my life,” he said. “I was quite happy looking after people and helping them.”

Mr Sayers lived in Chichester before Addison Way and then Braemar Way in North Bersted and moved into the home in January 2014. He married twice but has no direct relatives.
