Brilliant Brighton, the organisation which lights up the city, will turn on its festive lights at 3.30pm, although there will be no official switch-on event for 2019.

Canopies of lights will light up the Lanes and North Laine and words such as ‘Fairy’, ‘Twinkle’ and ‘Love’ will again light up North Street and Western Road.

Brilliant Brighton’s CEO Gavin Stewart said: “We always look forward to lighting up the city during the festive period.

“The city’s Christmas lights are a gift to the city’s residents and shoppers from our 517 businesses and we hope that they brighten up the long evenings and make Christmas shopping extra magical.”

Sponsoring the lights for 2019 is renewable electricity and gas supplier Octopus Energy to celebrate the ‘UK’s longest ever coal-free run’.

The company has also worked with St Paul’s CE Primary School to create Octopus-themed artwork that will be displayed.

Director of Octopus Energy for Business Zoisa Walton said: “Octopus Energy is celebrating the UK’s longest ever coal-free run this year by sponsoring the Brighton Christmas lights.

“We are thrilled to be working with local schools, businesses and community projects across the city to make Brighton greener than ever, and want to say a huge ‘Thank you’ to St Paul’s CE Primary School for helping us with our Christmassy designs.”

While there is no official switch-on event this year, smaller events running in the city centre include at Donatello, at Brighton Place.

The restaurant is teaming up with Brighton & Hove Buses for a festive event in The Lanes as they switch on its lights from 4.30pm. The event will also see Brighton & Hove Buses launch its Santa Bus and announce the 10 charities that the bus will be collecting for, alongside The Martlets, on the 20 nights it travels around the city in the lead up to Christmas.
