They were joned by Brighton and Hove’s mayor, Alex Phillips, who gave a speech at the event.

“It is good to know that the University of the Third Age could well be there for me once I am no longer in full-time employment!” she said.

She praised the group for the variety of activities they offer their members, from exercising to social activities and also complimented them on their efforts to tackle loneliness in older generations.

“We have an epidemic of loneliness in this City, predominantly amongst those who are retired.”

“U3A give people a reason to leave their homes, a reason to join in the fun, whether it be learning together, singing together, playing together, travelling together.”

The mayor also paid tribute to U3A’s founding members, four of whom were still involved with the branch up to its 25th anniversary in 2009.

Brighton and Hove U3A (University of the Third Age) provides social, sporting, and educational classes and activities for its members.

Sessions are run by volunteers and members pay a small annual fee to attend.
