Hastings town centre deserted on first day of national lockdown: in pictures

Hastings town centre and the seafront was deserted on Tuesday afternoon (January 5) – the first day of a third nationwide lockdown introduced to halt the increase in Covid-19 cases.

On a dreary day – reflecting much of the nation’s mood – Hastings’ residents appeared to obey the government’s latest instructions and stayed home. The infection rate in the town, which was in Tier 4 until Boris Johnson announced the latest lockdown on Monday evening (January 4), increased slightly on Monday, after a slight decrease on Sunday. A mobile testing unit will open at Pelham Place car park on Wednesday (January 6) and will remain in place until Friday (January 8). Here is a selection of photos showing Hastings town centre and the seafront on the first day of a third national lockdown due to Covid-19.
