Sussex children’s charity launches fund raising challenge
The Rockinghorse children’s charity has launched their new fund raising campaign asking people to help clock up enough kilometres to circumnavigate the globe.
Rockinghorse is a Brighton-based charity that has been supporting sick and disadvantaged children, babies and young people in Sussex for 53 years.
Like many charities, the last few months haven’t been easy for Rockinghorse, the official charitable arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. Their fundraising income has been seriously affected by the Covid-19 crisis, and yet children continue to fall ill, babies continue to be born prematurely and little bones continue to be broken.
So in order to help boost their fundraising over the upcoming summer months, the charity has developed a new challenge which is encouraging people to get sponsored to run, ride or ramble to accumulate enough kilometers between them to go round the world (that’s a total of 40,075km if you were wondering).
Anyone can get involved in any way they want; just pick a distance, break it down and record your distance on a tracking app.
Whether it’s running a mile a day for a month, completing a big 20km hike walk in one day or ‘virtually’ cycling from Edinburgh to Brighton (749 kilometers), every kilometer counts.
If you live in the city, why not ditch the bus or the car and walk everywhere for the summer then ask for sponsorship or donate the money you would have spent on petrol or travel fares?
Families could make a day of it by packing a lunch and heading to the great outdoors together. Take a gentle stroll somewhere scenic or, if you’re feeling energetic, up the ante to reach the same distance as a 24-hour Three Peaks Challenge.
Whatever distance you choose, just break down the amount and plan how you can reach it by spreading it over a few days, weeks or months. So, if you wanted to take on a coast to coast walk such as the 306km distance from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay, you could try and cover 10km a day for a month.
And it’s also a great challenge for running or cycling clubs or groups of friends or colleagues. More people mean bigger distances so get going and see how far you can get over a month.
Every kilometer covered will be recorded on the special Strava site set up by the charity. If you haven’t heard of Strava, it’s an app that tracks your fitness activity, recording your run, walk or cycle route along with distance and time.
Lucy Pond, Challenge Events Manager at the charity, explains more about the challenge; “With marathon season and many of our other events being cancelled or postponed this year, we wanted to come up with something that anyone could support, regardless of age or fitness levels.”
People can choose whatever way works best for them to help us collate those kilometers, as long as you record your distances on the Strava app. However far you manage to go it will all go towards us to reaching our total and help us to continue our vital work supporting sick children and young people across Sussex.”
To get involved all Rockinghorse is asking for is a £50 minimum sponsorship or donation to get involved. Join the fun and Run, Ride or Ramble for Rockinghorse on Strava at: https://www.strava.com/clubs/rockinghorse
