The annual awards ceremony was due to take place in the summer but was delayed due to the pandemic.

Despite lockdown it received over 70 award entries.

Four awards and four highly commended commendations for projects in Lewes and the surrounding area. In the public and community category, Denton Island in Newhaven (submitted by Douch Partners, Forest Row) achieved an Award for the addition of a youth facility to an existing community centre, with the judging team commenting “a superbly designed and built project. The project should take its place in an evolving strategy for social development, volunteering and social cohesion in Newhaven”.

In the commercial category, The Old Stables in Nutley (submitted by Pippingford Estate), won an Award for the repair of an 1850’s disused farm building. Further Awards went to newly designed private homes: Chalk House in Ditching (architect: Morgan Carn, Brighton) – which saw the demolition of dilapidated agricultural buildings for the construction of a family home and Ringmer Passivhaus (submitted by Hazle McCormack Young), a new build house replacing a redundant asbestos dairy barn.

The Highly Commended projects included: The Buzzardry in Rushlake (submitted by Blue Forest, Wadhurst), a unique stay treehouse let at the Marklye Estate; Alistair Fleming Design Showroom in Lewes, a Grade II listed foundry converted to a showroom and studio for bespoke kitchens and furniture; the charity Jamie’s Farm in Lewes for the conversion and refurb of an existing 19th-century Grade II listed farmhouse into accommodation; and, a Building Craft commendation for Lewes based roofer, Richard Soan Roofing Services for the re-roofing of a large house in East Sussex. The judging team noted the “well executed craftmanship and the care taken to match the original design”.

Chairman of the Sussex Heritage Trust, Simon Knight, said: “This good news story demonstrates the importance of excellent architecture and design, traditional building skills and craftmanship and arguably without these the heritage we have in Sussex would be all the poorer.”’
