Pett and Pett Level

John Taylor: Last weekend Pett lost one of its well-known residents. A retired engineer with 14 years service in the Royal Navy, John had lived in Pett for more than 30 years. With his wife Ray, he was heavily involved in the church and became a Church Warden, as well as supporting several local clubs including the Pett Naturalists Society and the now defunct Flicks in the Village. He had also been a governor of Guestling Bradshaw Primary School.

John was passionately interested in Pett and in addition to writing its history in the book Pett in Sussex, The Story of a Village, its Church and People, he had also collected a vast range of photographs of the village going back many years. Many people were able to have sight of these times past at the Jubilee Lunch in 2012 and more recently at two fascinating talks that John gave to Pett WI.

John was also a regular contributor to Pett Parish News and the February edition features his last column. You will be sadly missed, John.

Pett Parish Council: At the meeting held on Tuesday January 19, among the items raised in Public Time, Councillors heard that Rother District Council had launched a public consultation on council tax. RDC is considering raising its element of the council tax by 1.94%. This means that the council tax bill would go up by £3.13 per annum or 26p per month for a Band D property, the first increase in six years. It anticipates that it will continue to have the lowest council tax in East Sussex.

In addition, various issues associated with the Recreation Ground and the new pavilion were also raised.

Pett WI: The first evening meeting went extremely well. Nearly 40 ladies turned up and at least 6 new members joined up with more to follow.The meeting started with a glass of wine (or a soft drink) for everyone as they arrived and there soon was quite a loud buzz as old friends met up and introductions to new ones were made.

Before the meeting got down to business, there was a rousing rendition of Jerusalem, which all present joined in and then the President went through matters as speedily as possible. This was followed with cheese and biscuits and more conversation and the evening wound up just after 9pm with several ladies having a new perspective on the WI!

Church Services: On Sunday January 31 – Holy Communion, led by Richard Barron, St Mary & St Peter, Pett at 9:30am; Sunday Service at the Methodist Chapel at 10:45am.

Village Hall Management Committee: This committee will meet on Monday February 1 at 7pm at Pett Village Hall. The meeting is open to the public so please come along and give your ideas and views on the hall.

Pett Older People’s Project: On Tuesday February 2 POPP will feature Just George Sings. The session runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm and will include a two-course lunch for just £5.

Village Coffee Morning: The Village Coffee Morning takes place again on Wednesday February 3. Starting at 10am Sally and her team will be ready to welcome you with the very best coffee, tea, biscuits and yummy, yummy cakes.
