Police prevent suicide

A LEWES bobby helped prevent a suicidal man from throwing himself under a packed train leaving Lewes on Sunday.

PC Peter Harris manhandled the man in his 30s away from the line as he tried to push himself between the train and the platform.

It was a scary experience,' said PC Harris later.

'It is one's worst nightmare to see something like this happen successfully.'

Luckily there was a narrower than normal gap between the new-style train and the platform, giving police time to rescue the man who was shouting that he would kill himself.

'It was a spur of the moment thing,' added PC Harris. 'We acted instinctively.'

Police used pepper spray to restrain and arrest the man.

He was later charged with resisting arrest and was released on police bail after being interviewed under the Mental Health Act.

Earlier, just after 5pm, police had stopped the train from leaving in order to remove the same man following an alleged domestic criminal damage incident in Lewes.

It was then that the man suddenly broke away from police, threatening to kill himself.
